Volunteer Stories - Crux Media Mission in Norfolk

We were recently in Norfolk on a Crux Media mission week, where we worked in a local High school with the students by running lessons during the day and having Film School workshops after school. For this particular mission I really felt Gods presence throughout the entire week, the impact he was having in this school, just by using us being there, was amazing. Our Film School group had some unbelievable stories and it felt so good to know that God was there with us because otherwise I am not sure that I could have dealt with them. We had one girl who has no memory before 2006 because of medication, one girl who tried to kill herself, one boy who lost his parents, one boy whose dad threw him out of his house and so many other similarly terrible stories, it was heart breaking to hear them speak of these things so casually, even though they had been so hurt, as if this was just how life was supposed to be. Through Film School they really opened up and reflected on what had happened and how their lives had changed. They looked at their hopes for the future and we tried to get them to explore the concept of hope in Jesus and understand that through him everything they had suffered could be healed. Its not easy for their age group to understand what this means so we went away thinking that we had helped but that there was still a long way to go. Since that film school, several of the young people have gone to church. Its a small step but it was so encouraging to know that even though we were only there for a week and that we didn’t know how much of it had got through, God took control in such a powerful way and started the spark in their minds.
