Summer Trip to South Africa 2011

Stunning area of the world, with Table Mountain as a backdrop to the city and beautiful coastline with whales and penguins (yes there are penguins in Africa), this location is astounding in natural beauty.  Alongside this, there is a history of the fight against injustice, poverty and corruption, following the time when Nelson Mandela and other courageous people led the way to abolish apartheid (meaning ‘separation’) and establish freedom for all people in the country.

           

We are offering you a chance to visit this nation next summer and meet up with some amazing Christians who are working with children and young people across the city and surrounding areas.  Youth for Christ in Cape Town work in schools, hospitals, the SOS Children’s Home and poorer rural areas to encourage young people to consider the God who loves them, to think wider than their surroundings and have the confidence to aim high for their future.  

Who would I go with?

You would join a team of 6-8 UK people, together with experienced leaders, to spend two weeks alongside some of the YFC Cape Town staff and volunteers.

What sort of work would I do?

You could get involved in school programmes, sport and club activities in the Children’s homes and orphanages, visit children in hospital, besides learning first-hand about the history and culture of South Africa.  You would be challenged to think through the practical outworking of your faith, get a better understanding of youthwork in a cross-cultural setting and see what God is doing in one part of the massive African continent besides visiting places like Table Mountain & Robben Island. You won’t forget worship African-style and you would also make new friends on the other side of the world!

What about preparation?

There will be an opportunity to meet your leaders and team in April at the training weekend from 8-10 April in Rugby, when you will also meet YFC teams going out to other locations in Africa and Europe.  You will have training in cross-cultural issues, information on the location, medical advice and time for worship & prayer during the weekend and also at a further training day with your leaders before leaving for Cape Town.
