SPECIALIST TRAINING
Many of our year out options on yfc one offer the chance to receive specialist training through the year. When on the year with us, you will receive the main training as outlined on the training page, including Engage and the residential training. The only yfc one option that doesn't provide specific training is the general eta year. This is a year in general youth work and you will receive training to cover most aspects of youth work and provide you with the opportunity to see a wide spectrum of youth work options. Should you then wish to receive specialist training in an area of youth work you have experienced during your year on eta then Academy is the option for you.
Academy - this is a youth work stream designed for those that wish to go deeper into youth work. Academy doesn't have to be the second year of your time with YFC, it could be that you have to come to us with some youth work experience previously and wish to specialise and train in a certain area, but more often that not it is for those that have already done a year with yfc one and wish to do a second year and go deeper into youth work. Each Academy year is tailored to suit your needs during the year. Maybe you want to develop in public speaking, schools work, mentoring, administration, leadership, sports coaching, working with marginalised young people... the possibilities are almost endless! We will discuss with you what it is you want to become trained in and then find suitable training for you to go on and a mentor that has experience to help develop you in the area that you have a heart for. If you are applying for yfc one for the first time and wish to do the Academy year, then apply as usual but state you wish to apply for Academy.
Sports - If you join one of our sports team then you will become a qualified coach during the year. The Nomad team focus on football as a way of delivering youth work. If joining Nomad, then you will initially work with a qualified FA coach (Nomad Team Leader) who will help you as you start coaching. You will then be put forward for the FA Level 1 football coaching badge. On this course you will learn the basics of football coaching, normally taking 3 full days and a couple of evenings. This will progress the work you do and help you to build your qualifications. Training for this will fit into your year and the cost is covered by your fees.
eta Worship - The course is a chance to look in depth at what worship is really all about, as well as giving musicians the opportunity to explore and grow in their gifts and abilities. Through studying the Bible and relating it to our lives, we look to develop you as a worshipper - your heart attitude and growth as a disciple of Jesus. The team also receives practical teaching and experience about leading worship - how to get the best out of a band, arranging songs and improving your own musical skills. With this teaching in mind, the team will have the chance to record a personally written song in a studio and lead worship at mid year retreat in March.
Crux Media - This fantastic team lead young people through an interactive film school, a week-long programme of workshops that teaches the basics of film-making whilst releasing each student’s creativity through story-telling. Before leading this resource, you will be trained in sound, camera work, lighting and editing.
Crux Theatre - At the beginning of the year, after attending ETC, you will receive at least a week's worth of drama training to prepare you for leading drama clubs and sketches. You will also spend time learning the play that Crux Theatre have written and performed. This fantastic piece of drama will help to prompt conversations and lessons in schools.
